LA Journal--Death Alley

Before

This is a continuation in the series based on the newspaper headlines that appeared in the LA papers when I was on vacation. The page started out as one of my favorites (seen above). The page was bright with yellows and oranges with a sunburst orange cloud in the middle.

The headlines of the paper dealt with a Texas--Mexico conflict where people where dying on their way to illegally cross the border. There is a stretch of abandoned road where people try to cross and many people are simply too weak from the effort and are left to die out in the open--abandoned by their loved ones and the by the people who were paid to bring them across. The police officials call this stretch of road--Death Alley due to the number of people who are found dead.

I have always been attracted to typography so the background consists of the lyrics to two songs famous in Texas--The Yellow Rose of  Texas (written in orange maker along the diagonal) and Texas O Texas (the State song of Texas--written in a circle with black marker). The title of the page was written on either side of the margin in Fuschia marker using a stencil guide.

To add interest to the page, I cut out a stencil of the state of Texas and colored it with orange water soluble crayon and then proceeded to wet the crayon to give the outline of Texas in orange. I then cut out another stencil in the shape of a skull and used water resistant crayon to color in the stencil in black wax crayon. To finish off the piece, I used my homemade alcohol inks to simulate blood and bruises found on many of the dead bodies. The colors of the inks were blue, pink, blood red, orange, and yellow.

I usually don't go for such morbid topics but after reading the article in the paper I believe the page warranted the treatment that it received. Being from Texas made the project even more difficult to do.

LA Journal--Paula

Today's page from my LA Journal deals with the Paula Dean controversy which was a big breakthrough when I was on vacation in LA. News included YouTube statements, cancelled interviews, dropped sponsorships, rescheduled interviews, and crying on TV.

As a sociologist, we use the terms Racist and Bigot in very specific ways. Therefore this page was dedicated to the difference between the two terms.

LA Journal--Snowden

Today. I decided to share with you my first completed page in my LA Journal. As discussed previously, I am making one page dedicated to the newspaper headlines during my stay in Los Angeles. The first page is attributed to the Snowden controversy.

The background was repainted with alcohol inks. The ink drops were supposed to resemble blood stains. The American flag was reconfigured to look like the American flag under glass. The edges were torn and the pieces were separated from each other to resemble how the issue is dividing the nation. The Snowden photo was the photo posted in the newspapers and was ghost printed on paper. I then used the contact paper image transfer technique. The image was glue to card stock before be glued to the page.

The white out roller tape was used for the caption which was written on with a red Sharpie.

Happy Independence Day for my American readers.

LA Journal

I have returned back from Los Angeles and decided that I would share with you the journal that I am making from my trip. I was there for 7 days and 6 nights, so I decided to dedicate one page to each day that I was there.

The source material for each day will deal with a headline from the newspapers that I read. Each page will be dedicated to one topic. I clipped the newspaper articles for source material and brought them home with me.

Here are the seven pages that I will be using.

Granted, some of the pages turned out lighter than I would have wanted but I will go back and add more color to them.

Let the creating begin.
