Broadway Boxes

Left: Japanese lift top box
Right: Japanese lift top box with inserts

On Broadway, there are several traditions that happen when one of the actors leaves the production. On the final performance, the cast usually sings the song Happy Trails before the curtain raises on the final performance of the leaving actor. Another tradition, especially if the actor is an understudying a role in the show, is to give the actor copies of the program inserts (stuffers) as a memento of their participation in the show.

One of the problems with receiving the inserts is that they are usually loose pieces of paper. Many Broadway shows simply recycle the inserts when the actor leaves the show. For our production, I used to make notepads by using padding solution to glue all of the loose pieces of paper into one solid notepad. We would hand a couple of the notepads to the exiting actor for their own personal use.

For our current production, I have been making handmade boxes to hold the inserts so that actors could have a nicer way to keep their inserts as they use them for scratch paper. This past weekend, I made a prototype for one size of the inserts. It is simple a lift top box to hold the loose inserts inside.

Notice the dimension of the boxes--there is a 1/8th inch reveal of the bottom tray

Here are the two prototypes of boxes that I made for one type of inserts. I am a little partial to the blue box. Both boxes use papers from a marbler in Germany that I will be featuring next week. I am still waiting for his permission to feature him online.

The top and bottom trays are covered in bookcloth and the decorative paper is cut to size.

These boxes are based on a Japanese design that I discovered on my last trip to Japan. I will detail the differences between Western style boxes and Japanese style boxes in a later post. Right now, I just want to bask in their beauty.

Japan Journal

This is the last set of pictures for my Japan Journal. Next week's Journal Monday will continue with my Art Journal.

The Japanese love their neon and nighttime in Tokyo is absolutely stunning.

Japan Journal

The is the next to last entry in my Japan Journal. This features a small shrine that is smack dab in the middle of a large industrial area outside of the Hotel Okura. I got lost leaving my hotel and ran into this small but serene setting. These pictures really represent many of the wonders that I love about visiting Japan.

Japan Journal

As I was walking in Tokyo on a windswept day, I ducked around a corner to get away from the latest gust of wind. When I turned around, I saw this sculpture one-half block away. For a minute, I thought that I was back in NYC again.

Japan Journal

This was another of the hotels that we stayed. This hotel features fresh flowers and kimono-clad elevator operators. I embarrased this young lady when I asked to take her picture. The only reason she acquiesced was because I was a foreign patron of the hotel.

Japan Journal

We stayed at this hotel for four days and I would walk by these fountains every day. It wasn't until I was checking out of the hotel that I realized that these were supposed to represent the signs of the zodiac.

Japan Journal

These pages combine two of my favorite aspects of Japan--old architecture and kimono. The background on the left page features a tradition kimono print. The kimono on the right was from a store window display--it was done with a photo transfer technique on a direct ink-to-page process.

Japan Journal

Today's feature in the Japan Journal deals with giftgiving. My boss thought that I was crazy because I wasted the equivalent of a $10 bill. The page on the right uses direct ink to paper. The paper used for the background on the right is an actual kimono design that has been translated to paper.

Continuing with Japan's architecture, I was walking around my hotel when I found this little temple. I couldn't help but notice the juxtaposition of the temple and the modern crane looming in the background (which was building a new skyscraper).

Japan Journal

Today's Japan Journal features some of the architecture of Japan. Japan is well-known for some of its great architecture. The Japanese believe in tall and angular; yet, they also believe in short and curvy.

Japan Journal

I have decided to share the rest of my Japan Journal. I am starting an Art Journal so I thought that I would share these pictures until the Art Journal is ready. I will try not to duplicate entries since I have already shared some of the pages. I would like to share this on a weekly basis.

The background for many of the pages will highlight Japanese paper that I bought while in Japan. Other backgrounds will feature ink to page techniques.

I hate my own handwriting (even my printing as evidenced above) so many entries have been typed in a few of my favorite fonts.

This set of pages features haiku that I wrote while experiencing the 14 hour flight. The other page features many of my receipts. I collect every piece of paper when I am on a trip.

Japan Journal--Holiday Cards

I am finishing up some outstanding projects and I have just completed my Japan Journal. Most of the journal had already been designed and the inscriptions had already been planned. All that I needed to do was simply assemble everything.

The backgrounds of the pages feature paper samples of papers that I purchased on this trip.

This page features a Christmas card that I found at Tokyu Hands Tokyo and one of my New Year's Postcards for 2009 which was printed on my Print Gocco.

Even More Japan Journal

Since it has been a while since I have shared pages from my Japan Journal, I decided to add two more pages.

One of the aspects that I enjoy about Japan is the orderliness of the people there. Also, people are very nice and polite to foreigners. Signs appear in several languages and the expectations of people are clearly delineated.

The first page deals with travelling on the subway and riding the escalator. The second page is the subway map. These maps are everywhere in Tokyo and most hotels will give you a map every time you leave the front door.

More Japan Journal

Here is another set of journal pages from my Japan Journal. The left page features a direct to page ink technique using cosmetic sponges and ink pads. I like the random effect that is caused using this technique. The right side feature two double mounted pics but also the common theme of this journal--a sample of paper that I purchased on my trip.

Japan Journal

While I was away, someone asked me about the travel journal that I made before going on my last trip to Japan. I had intended on filling it up while I was there but, of course, that didn't happen. I have all of the pages designed--all I have to do is execute them.

Most of the pages will feature Japanese arts and crafts. Similarly, many of the pages will feature backgrounds that show paper samples from my trip. This is the first in the series of my Japan Journal. It features materials that I purchased at Tokyu Hands.

If any knows the title of the characters that are featured in the stickers (or the artist) I would definitely appreciate it if you could let me know. I know it is a popular character, possibly from children's books. For some reason, they just make me smile. I would definitely like to get more of these stickers. Any help locating the name of the characters or the artist would be great.
